Fyne Ales, a brewery in rural Scotland, commissioned a bespoke below ground (off mains drainage) industrial packaged wastewater treatment solution. The client’s brief was to ensure there would be minimal visual impact upon the beautiful surrounding location and view from the family home located nearby.

Ondeo Industrial Solutions were commissioned by Fyne Ales to deliver the turnkey design and build project, and chose WPL’s (off mains) HiPAF kit in the latter half of 2014 to work with their overall solution.

The micro-brewery treats its own waste due to the rural location and lack of nearby municipal works capacity. The industrial solution also needed to take in to account the highly fluctuating flows and loads during the process.

WPL proposed a 2 tank HiPAF packaged treatment plant to Ondeo to ensure there was sufficient biological capacity to treat the BOD demand to the required SEPA standards. The low volume but high BOD dictated the size of the plant.WPL’s HiPAF supports Ondeos overall project requirements which include, but not limited to:

  • Below ground solution so not to impact existing views of natural beauty
  • Transportable modular configuration allowing easier transportation down the very rural singular track road

Andrew Haywood, Utility and Industrial Sales Manager, states “Ondeo chose our process solution to support their overall objective of the client’s brief, as WPL is regarded as a high specification supplier to the UK water utilities, and has tried and tested below ground reference sites that suited the clients aspirations.”

Duty Standby blowers were also specified for process reassurance, to increase air supply to potentially overcome build-up of biofilm which can be caused by higher BOD concentrations
